Chinese Red Cross Donates $100,000 to Earthquake Victims in Northern Afghanistan

The Afghan Red Crescent Society, operating under Taliban administration, has announced it has received a $100,000 cash donation from the Red Cross Society of China to assist victims of the recent earthquake in the northern provinces of Balkh and Samangan.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 11, the organization confirmed the donation was formally handed over by Bao Zhuohui, Deputy Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Kabul.
Hafiz Azizurrahman, the Taliban’s deputy at the Afghan Red Crescent Society, expressed gratitude for the Chinese contribution, stating the funds will be delivered to families affected by the earthquake. However, he did not provide details on how the money will be distributed or how the process will be overseen.
Last week, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Khulm district of Samangan province, impacting vast areas in northern Afghanistan, particularly Samangan and Balkh.
According to official figures from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the quake resulted in 25 deaths and injured approximately 984 others.
While international relief efforts continue, affected residents have voiced frustration over the lack of transparent planning, delays in aid distribution, and the Taliban’s seeming inattention. The absence of an accountable government and independent institutions poses significant challenges to effectively addressing the needs of those impacted by the disaster.
