Pakistan Expels Nearly 3,000 Afghan Migrants in a Single Day

The Taliban’s High Commission for Migrant Affairs has announced that Pakistan expelled at least 2,990 Afghan migrants on Friday, 3 April. According to the commission, these individuals entered Pakistan through the Torkham border crossing in Nangarhar and Spin Boldak in Kandahar.

The commission’s statement also noted that on the same day, at least 169 returnees were transported from Kabul to various provinces within Afghanistan. No details were released about their accommodation, basic services, or subsequent support for these families.

This move comes amid Pakistan’s intensified crackdown in recent weeks on undocumented migrants, with reports indicating that the Torkham crossing has recently been reactivated to expedite the expulsion process.

The surge in migrant expulsions occurs while many returnees face severe economic hardships and a lack of job opportunities inside Afghanistan. Nevertheless, the Taliban administration has yet to introduce a clear and comprehensive plan to sustainably address the status of these migrants and prevent potential social crises.
