Three-Day Drinking Water Cut in Herat City Announced by Taliban Authorities

The Department of Water Supply and Sewerage under Taliban administration in Herat has announced that the city’s water network will be shut off for three days from April 1 to April 4 (11 to 14 Hamal in the Persian calendar). The department cited the installation and relocation of a 400mm production pipeline in front of the north gate of the Western Zone Water Supply and Sewerage Department as the reason for the disruption.

In a statement published on Tuesday, March 30 (10 Hamal), residents of Herat were urged to store enough water during this period to avoid shortages. However, many families in various parts of the city lack sufficient facilities for long-term water storage.

Herat city, one of the populous and significant provinces in western Afghanistan, has faced serious challenges in urban services in recent years. Previously, frequent power outages had disrupted water pumping and distribution in some city areas, creating considerable difficulties for residents.

Urban experts have repeatedly emphasized that the absence of systematic planning and sustainable investment in service infrastructure places extra burdens on citizens. Nevertheless, the Taliban administration has yet to provide details of alternative measures to mitigate the impact of this three-day water cutoff.
