Taliban Official Holds Talks with Chinese Envoy on Investment Opportunities in Afghanistan

The Taliban’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced that Nuruddin Azizi, acting head of the ministry, met with Yu Shaowei, China’s special representative, to discuss the development of trade relations and investment opportunities in Afghanistan.
According to published information, the Chinese special envoy stated that Chinese traders and investors are interested in the Afghan market and consider the country to have extensive investment potential. He emphasized continuing cooperation to facilitate trade and expand investment between the two nations.
In response, the acting head of the Taliban’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce claimed that security and a conducive environment for investment in Afghanistan have been established and called on Chinese investors to invest in various economic sectors of the country. This comes despite the fact that the lack of official recognition of the Taliban administration and banking and financial restrictions remain major challenges to attracting foreign investment.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of increasing Afghanistan’s exports, particularly cotton, pomegranates, pine nuts, and precious stones. Both sides agreed to enhance customs and transit facilities between Afghanistan and China, a move that, if implemented, could significantly impact trade levels between the two countries.
