Significant Increase in Fuel Imports Reported in Afghanistan for 2025

The Taliban’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce has announced a substantial rise in fuel imports in Afghanistan for the year 2025 compared to 2024. According to the data provided, petrol imports have increased by 27 percent, diesel by 53 percent, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 30 percent.
The ministry stated that in the past year, Afghanistan imported LPG, petrol, and diesel from various regional countries, with the total value of these imports exceeding 2.496 billion US dollars.
Fuel is considered one of the essential commodities for the country, and the increase in imports can directly impact prices, transport activities, and production sectors. However, the Taliban administration has not provided details regarding the sources of supply, price monitoring mechanisms, or how market fluctuations will be prevented.
Economic experts consistently emphasize that heavy reliance on fuel imports makes Afghanistan’s economy vulnerable to regional developments and stress the need for clear plans to manage the market and protect consumers.
