Iraq Reports Transfer of 5,703 ISIS Prisoners from Syria, Details Nationalities

The Iraqi Ministry of Justice has announced that 5,703 prisoners affiliated with ISIS have been transferred from Syria to Iraq. According to officials from the ministry, these individuals come from 61 countries, and the process of detaining and reviewing their cases is ongoing.

Ahmed Laibi, spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Justice, stated that among these detainees, 4,253 are Arabs and 983 are non-Arabs. He added that 467 of the prisoners are Iraqi, while 3,543 are Syrian.

Laibi indicated that special halls have been prepared in the central Al-Karkh prison to house and categorize these detainees. This categorization is based on information provided to Iraq by member countries of the international coalition, including Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, India, Australia, Belgium, Georgia, and Denmark.

The Iraqi official further noted that among the transferred prisoners, 187 are from Morocco, 165 from Turkmenistan, 181 from Turkey, 234 from Tunisia, 130 from Russia, and 116 from Egypt.

According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Justice, Iraq’s National Security Council decided, at the request of the international coalition, that these individuals be received through the Counter-Terrorism Organization at the martyr Muhammad Alaa Airbase. Their transfer was carried out via the Rabia border crossing and coordinated with the Joint Operations Command.

He also mentioned that a committee composed of officials from the National Intelligence Service, the Intelligence Organization, and the National Security Organization has been formed to follow up on the matter, while judicial committees are responsible for issuing rulings.
