UNICEF Launches Food Aid Program for Earthquake-Affected Families in Eastern Afghanistan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced a new initiative to support families affected by recent earthquakes in eastern Afghanistan, in collaboration with the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and with financial backing from the French government. The program targets the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, which suffered extensive damage due to earthquakes in 2025.

According to UNICEF, the project is funded with two million euros under the ‘France Initiative for Food Security and Nutrition.’ Its goals are to enhance household food production capacity, improve access to nutritious food, and reduce malnutrition cases.

Published information indicates that more than 51,000 individuals will directly benefit from this program. Many of these families faced severe food insecurity and nutritional deficiencies after their productive assets were destroyed by the earthquake.

The program primarily focuses on the earthquake-affected districts in Kunar and Nangarhar, areas where decreased household production capacity has limited access to food. UNICEF added that strengthening food production and nutrition-related services could indirectly impact the lives of approximately 190,000 people in these districts.

Relief organizations emphasize that the continuation of such programs is critically important to prevent the spread of malnutrition and to reduce the vulnerability of families to natural crises.
