Tajikistan Calls for Global Attention on Afghanistan’s Security and Humanitarian Challenges

The Foreign Minister of Tajikistan has expressed deep concern over the situation in Afghanistan, urging the international community not to abandon the country amid its security, social, and economic challenges. Sirajuddin Mehruddin stated that border insecurities and the humanitarian conditions in Afghanistan require broader global attention and cooperation.

On Friday, during a press conference summarizing the activities of 2025, he announced that Tajik security agencies and the Taliban administration are jointly working to prevent destabilizing incidents along the shared border between the two countries. According to him, such cooperation has gained increased importance following a rise in clashes and armed attacks in the border areas.

Mehruddin added that both sides have condemned the activities of criminal groups and what he described as “terrorists.” Nevertheless, the ongoing insecurity on the border indicates that the Taliban administration’s efforts to control these threats still face serious challenges, and concerns among neighboring countries remain.

The Tajik Foreign Minister said that the Taliban administration has assured that necessary measures will be taken to prevent recurrence of such events and that comprehensive investigations will be conducted. These remarks come amid reports of several border clashes in recent months.

He also emphasized that Tajikistan welcomes cooperation from any country aiming to help solve the social and economic problems of neighboring countries, including Afghanistan. Mehruddin stated that Dushanbe seeks to play a constructive role in alleviating the suffering of the Afghan people.

According to his statements, Tajikistan has so far sent over six thousand tons of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. This aid in 2025, especially in support of victims of devastating earthquakes, has included food and essential supplies.

The Tajik Foreign Minister also announced an increase in trade between the two sides and said the process of reviving border markets and transmitting electricity to Afghanistan continues. However, experts believe that without sustainable stability and effective border management by the Taliban administration, these cooperative efforts risk interruption.

According to Tajik media reports, at least five border clashes along the Tajik-Afghan border have been recorded in less than three months.
