UK Backs the Right to Education for Afghan Girls Ahead of International Day of the Girl

As the International Day of the Girl approaches, the British Embassy in Afghanistan issued a statement expressing deep concern over the state of education for Afghan girls and emphasizing the importance of supporting their rights.

The statement highlighted that educating girls not only empowers them individually but also strengthens communities and fosters economic growth. The British Embassy added that no country can achieve genuine progress without the full participation of half its population.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, extensive restrictions have been placed on girls’ right to education, leading to the closure of secondary and high schools for them. This move has drawn strong domestic and international condemnation, yet the Taliban administration has so far refused to lift the ban.

Alongside other countries worldwide, the UK has called for the reopening of schools and an end to discriminatory educational policies against Afghan girls. Global organizations have also repeatedly warned that the continuation of these measures will have long-term negative consequences for Afghanistan’s human development and economic progress.
