Adela Raz Appointed to UN Advisory Board on Multidimensional Vulnerability Index

The United Nations has announced that Adela Raz, former Afghan ambassador to the UN, has been appointed by Secretary-General António Guterres as a member of the Independent Expert Advisory Board on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) for the 2026-2030 term.

According to a statement released on Tuesday, 26 January, the board has been established to strengthen the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index and provide evidence-based assessments on the structural vulnerability of developing countries. This index serves as an analytical tool that evaluates countries’ economic, social, and environmental conditions against shocks and crises.

The board members will independently be responsible for conducting a triennial review of the index, monitoring countries’ progress, and offering policy recommendations. Their findings are expected to inform developmental and international decision-making.

The Multidimensional Vulnerability Index Advisory Board comprises 15 experts from various countries who specialise in economic and social development, environmental issues, and resilience. Alongside independent experts, representatives from government sectors, civil society, and academic institutions also participate within this framework.

The board is scheduled to hold its inaugural meeting in 2026 and will commence preparations for the first triennial review of the index, planned for 2028.
