UN-Habitat Urges Skills Investment Amid Rising Urbanization in Afghanistan

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has warned that the increasing migration of residents from rural areas to cities, without targeted investment in skills, could create serious economic and social challenges.
This UN agency announced in a message on Thursday, 9th Dalw, that the urban economy, in order to meet labor market demands, requires diverse skills and various specializations to provide decent work opportunities for citizens.
The message emphasized that with the intensifying trend of urbanization, providing technical and vocational education can help people live with dignity in urban environments and participate in economic activities.
UN-Habitat also stated that urbanization in Afghanistan is on the rise and, based on the agency’s estimates, by the year 2026, one in every two residents of the country will live in cities; a development that highlights the urgent need for urban planning and job creation.
