UN Charter is the Foundation of the Global Order, Says António Guterres

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has emphasized that the UN Charter forms the basis of international relations and is the cornerstone of peace, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights. On Wednesday, January 21, in a message on the social media platform X, he stated that deliberate violations of international laws by leaders and selective enforcement of rules directly undermine the global order and leave behind a “dangerous” precedent. The UN chief warned that when a small number of individuals or groups can distort global narratives, influence election outcomes, or impose the framework for public discourse, the international community faces inequality, institutional corruption, and weakening shared values. Without naming any specific country or actor, Guterres stressed the responsibility of world leaders to adhere to accepted international principles, adding that respect for these rules is an essential condition for trust, stability, and cooperation among nations.
