World Bank Supports Rehabilitation of Legedi Canal in Farkhar District, Afghanistan

The Legedi canal in Farkhar district of Takhar province has been rehabilitated with the financial support of the World Bank, completed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The canal, approximately 1,100 meters long, has now been restored.

According to officials, this project has improved the irrigation system for more than 32 hectares of agricultural land and provided better access to irrigation water for 4,060 local residents. Additionally, the project has created over 250 job opportunities for the local population.

While such infrastructure projects are an important step towards improving the livelihoods of farming families, concerns remain over the lack of transparent planning and accountability by the Taliban administration. Preventing abuse and ensuring fairness in resource distribution require close oversight by independent institutions.

Takhar province, located in northeastern Afghanistan, is among the country’s key agricultural regions. However, in recent years, serious damage has been inflicted on its infrastructure due to the Taliban administration’s neglect of development affairs. International organizations such as the World Bank and FAO have partially filled the governance gap by addressing some of the needs of the local population.
