UNICEF Provides Clean Water for Afghan Returnees at Torkham Border

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is providing clean drinking water at the Torkham zero point border crossing for returning Afghan nationals. This initiative particularly supports children and families who have recently returned from Pakistan, helping them protect themselves from waterborne diseases by accessing safe and clean water.

According to UNICEF, the project has been implemented in cooperation with a partner organization and financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Distributing clean water at border points such as Torkham is crucial for the health of returnee migrants, many of whom face serious health challenges during their journey.

While the provision of healthcare and clean drinking water is officially the responsibility of the relevant authorities in Afghanistan, the Taliban administration has failed to offer adequate and sustainable services due to mismanagement and poor performance. As a result, the role of international organizations in supporting returnees remains critical.
