UN Security Council to Hold December Meeting on Afghanistan

The United Nations Security Council has announced plans to hold its quarterly meeting in December to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. The session will focus on assessing the role and activities of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

According to an official statement from the Council, Georgette Gagnon, the acting head of UNAMA, will attend the meeting alongside several officials from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). These representatives are expected to present their findings and perspectives on Afghanistan’s humanitarian and political conditions.

While the exact date and full agenda of the meeting have not yet been announced, the gathering holds particular political and international significance. In the current context—with the Taliban in control of the country—the role of international bodies such as UNAMA in supporting human rights and delivering humanitarian aid has attracted increased global attention.

UNAMA’s mandate was recently extended by the Security Council, and its performance is under growing scrutiny, particularly in areas such as the protection of women’s rights, journalists, and vulnerable Afghan populations amid ongoing repression by the Taliban regime.
