UN Official Visits Volunteer Programs in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province

Myung Park, Regional Deputy for the United Nations Volunteers Programme, recently visited Watapur district in Kunar province to observe ongoing volunteer efforts in response to current crises.

During her visit, Park met with local volunteers and lauded the significant impact of their work in addressing emergency situations. She emphasized the vital role that trained volunteers play in improving community conditions.

Park described the trip as part of her broader mission to explore sustainable crisis management solutions. She said her main goal is to prepare communities for future emergencies by establishing local volunteer networks capable of rapid response during crises.

Afghanistan has faced continuous natural and man-made disasters in recent years. While such volunteer initiatives can strengthen community resilience, the lack of sufficient support infrastructure and security restrictions imposed by the Taliban administration hinder the effective expansion of these programs. Park stressed the urgent need for attention from independent international organizations to address these challenges.
