UN Secretary-General Warns of Rising Violations of Women’s Rights in Afghanistan

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, stated at the Security Council meeting on October 27 that violations of the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan have increased, and they face severe restrictions. According to Guterres, girls have been deprived of their fundamental right to education.

Guterres also highlighted the growing violence and discrimination in Afghanistan’s conflict zones and emphasized the necessity of women’s participation in peace processes. The UN Secretary-General stressed that women leaders, politicians, journalists, and human rights activists in the country are being marginalized and targeted by attacks.

He called on the international community to increase financial support for women-led organizations and hold perpetrators of violence against women accountable.

Meanwhile, Tamie Brous, the Deputy US Representative to the United Nations, condemned the Taliban administration’s restrictions on Afghan women and girls and demanded an immediate end to these limitations. She emphasized that over the past five years, the Taliban regime has destroyed decades of Afghan women’s achievements in peace and security.

Since the Taliban took power, Afghan women and girls have faced widespread bans and restrictions in education, employment, and social participation, with negative consequences felt across various aspects of Afghan society.
