UNICEF Continues Sending Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan via Uzbekistan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says the flow of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan via Uzbekistan is continuing.
Tajudeen Oyewale, head of UNICEF’s office in Afghanistan, said the agency has established a logistics and supply centre in the Uzbek city of Termez, from where aid is transported into Afghanistan.
Mr. Oyewale added that the centre allows UNICEF to continuously provide nutritional treatment services for children suffering from malnutrition in Afghanistan. According to him, about 3.7 million Afghan children are facing malnutrition this year, around one million of whom need urgent treatment.
The announcement comes as the closure of border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as restrictions imposed following the Iran-US war in the Strait of Hormuz region, have caused major difficulties for the delivery of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
Previously, the UN World Food Programme said food aid for Afghanistan is now reaching the country through eight different countries, a development that has significantly increased the cost and time of aid deliveries.
