Taliban burns more than 600 kg of narcotics in Panjshir

In Panjshir province, more than 600 kilograms of narcotics seized in different parts of the province were burned by the drug enforcement department of the provincial police command. The action was carried out in the presence of several local Taliban officials.
The burning of narcotics by the Taliban comes as drug trafficking and drug use have long been among Afghanistan’s most serious challenges. The incident is seen as a symbol of the Taliban administration’s show of efforts, which has so far failed to prevent the spread, cultivation and trafficking of narcotics and has had widespread negative consequences for society and the country’s economy.
The move comes as the Taliban administration has repeatedly spoken about fighting drugs, but experts and international organisations have stressed that these efforts are insufficient. Panjshir province, too, as one of the country’s sensitive regions, continues to grapple with this problem.
