Senior Taliban Official Claims Afghanistan Is Secure Despite Ongoing Instability

Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, the Deputy Administrative Chief of the Taliban’s Prime Minister’s Office, has said that security has been established in Afghanistan. Speaking at a meeting with tribal elders and community leaders from the Gurziwan and Belcheragh districts of Faryab province, Hanafi stated that security is the foundation for development in any society.

According to a statement released by the Taliban-run presidential office, local guests at the meeting shared insights on the social and security situation in the two districts and praised the Taliban forces for their role in maintaining security. However, reports from Faryab province point to continuing insecurity and widespread poverty in its remote areas.

Residents of the region highlighted critical shortcomings in healthcare, road infrastructure, electricity supply, and telecommunications services. They called on Taliban local officials to take practical steps to meet the basic needs of the population.

During the meeting, Hanafi claimed that with the Taliban in power, security has been ensured across the country and that people are peacefully going about their daily lives. This assertion stands in contrast to on-the-ground realities, as security gaps and economic hardships persist across many areas.

Hanafi also promised that Taliban officials would make efforts to address public issues based on available resources. Nonetheless, widespread corruption, a lack of accountability, and poor planning have led to repeated, yet largely unfulfilled, promises by the authorities.
