Afghan envoy calls for independent probe into detention and killings of former soldiers

Naseer Ahmad Faiq, acting permanent representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations, says the detention and killing of former soldiers in Afghanistan have continued over the past five years, despite the Taliban leader’s announcement of a “general amnesty.”
In a message on Wednesday, 22 October, Faiq described the incidents as part of what he called the Taliban administration’s inhumane policies, saying that targeted killings, torture, enforced disappearance and death in custody constitute serious human rights violations.
He has called on the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), the Special Rapporteur on human rights and other international bodies to carry out independent and transparent investigations into the incidents.
Faiq stressed that those responsible must be identified and held accountable for their actions.
