IOM completes 112 disaster risk reduction projects in Afghanistan

The International Organization for Migration says it has completed 112 projects to reduce natural disaster risk in Afghanistan since 2025, aimed at lowering communities’ vulnerability to events such as floods, earthquakes and drought.

Marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the agency stressed the importance of preparedness and early action, saying prevention must begin before a disaster strikes, not after damage has been done.

According to the International Organization for Migration, Afghanistan faces a range of natural hazards, including floods, drought, earthquakes and landslides. These events can damage homes, farmland and infrastructure, and threaten families’ livelihoods.

To reduce the impact of seasonal flooding, the organization said it has built small-scale infrastructure in Afghanistan, including protective walls, canals, small dams, drainage systems and irrigation networks. It said these measures help protect homes, farmland and people’s livelihoods.

The International Organization for Migration also said it has strengthened the ability of local communities to respond to disasters. Training in the use of early warning systems, first aid, basic search and rescue, and the preparation of local crisis management plans were among the measures cited.
