NATO Says Russia Suffers More Than 40,000 Casualties a Month in Ukraine War
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has said that Russia is suffering more than 40,000 killed or severely wounded each month in the war in Ukraine, a figure he said shows Moscow has given no sign of ending the conflict despite the heavy human cost.
According to Euronews, Rutte said on Saturday that NATO’s assessment is that Russian forces’ monthly losses have exceeded 40,000 killed or severely wounded. He described the situation as evidence of a war continuing at a heavy human cost.
The NATO chief also claimed that Russia is trying to undermine the stability of Western countries and weaken support for Ukraine through “hostile, reckless and dangerous” actions. According to him, Vladimir Putin believes he can sow division among NATO members, but will fail to achieve that goal.
Rutte went on to claim that if China decides to move against Taiwan, Xi Jinping would first call Vladimir Putin in Moscow to keep the West occupied in Europe. He added that such a situation could further highlight the security link between the Indo-Pacific region and Europe.
NATO is a Western military alliance established after World War II and has provided broad political and military support to Kyiv since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The war in Ukraine escalated into a full-scale conflict in February 2022 and remains one of the main flashpoints of tension between Russia and the West.
