Trump criticises Europe for not backing US in tensions with Iran
US President Donald Trump, during his trip to Dublin, again criticised Europe’s stance over tensions with Iran, saying NATO and European countries had not cooperated with Washington in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Al Jazeera, citing Mehr news agency, Trump on Saturday described the performance of NATO and America’s European allies in response to the episode as “very disappointing in many ways.” He said NATO did not want to help the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, while, he said, Washington does not receive any oil through the route.
Trump also claimed that the United States had destroyed all the naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. “We cleared all the mines. There are no mines there anymore,” he said.
The US president had previously said that ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz would continue smoothly and claimed that the passage was under US control. At the same time, he criticised European countries for refusing to help Washington secure Hormuz.
In another part of his remarks, Trump also targeted Europe’s policies on trade, energy and migration, expressing dissatisfaction with the continent’s situation in these areas.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for energy transport, and any tension along the route attracts widespread international attention.
