Trump Promises $5,000 ‘Dividend’ to Adult Americans if Republicans Keep Congress
US President Donald Trump has said he will pay every adult American $5,000 under what he called a “Trump dividend” if Republicans retain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections.
He floated the plan at the Republican Party’s first election rally for the midterms in Dallas. However, it remains unclear how such payments would be carried out or whether they would be legally possible.
According to the report, with around 270 million adults in the United States, implementing such a proposal would cost nearly $1.35 trillion.
In the prime-time speech, which lasted one hour and 45 minutes, Trump praised his record over the past two years and put himself at the centre of the Republican election campaign.
Even so, it is unclear whether the campaign promise can win over undecided voters in favour of Republicans. Polls show that some voters have drifted away from Trump’s party, amid rising discontent over the cost of living and the war with Iran.
US midterm elections are held every two years, with some congressional seats put to the vote. They are also commonly seen as a measure of the president’s political standing.
