UAE Seeks Defence and AI Cooperation with Germany, Diplomatic Adviser Says
Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the president of the United Arab Emirates, has said Abu Dhabi is seeking to strengthen cooperation with Germany in the defence sector as well as in artificial intelligence. The remarks were made ahead of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the UAE president, making an official visit to Germany.
According to Mehr News Agency, citing Aram News, Gargash told the German news agency that now is the time to elevate ties between the two countries. He described relations between the UAE and Germany as important for both sides.
Gargash also pointed to the possibility of cooperation between the two countries in counter-drone systems. He said the war in Ukraine and the war with Iran have shown that the world is not sufficiently prepared to deal with missiles and drones.
He added that Germany is also aware that future missions will not necessarily be the same as past ones. Gargash further said that the UAE is paying particular attention to artificial intelligence.
The UAE president is set to travel to Berlin for a multi-day official visit. He is due to meet German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and several other German officials on Thursday.
Germany is considered one of Europe’s major powers, and defence and technology cooperation with Gulf states has become one of the main pillars of bilateral relations in recent years. In turn, the United Arab Emirates has sought over the past few years to expand its ties with European partners in the security and technology fields.
