UN says 23 million people in Afghanistan face food insecurity
The United Nations has said the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan remains alarming, with nearly 23 million people in the country facing severe food insecurity.
The body said people in Afghanistan are still struggling with extensive humanitarian needs after more than four decades of war, instability and natural disasters. According to the UN, a large share of the country’s population still requires humanitarian assistance.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the UN added that Afghanistan now hosts one of the world’s largest refugee populations. It warned that the country is becoming one of the world’s biggest humanitarian crises.
The United Nations also stressed that it will remain with the people of Afghanistan and will continue to provide humanitarian aid and basic services to those in need. It called on the international community to continue its support in addressing Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis.
In recent years, Afghanistan has faced long wars, drought, earthquakes and widespread internal displacement, factors that have increased pressure on livelihoods and the need for emergency assistance in different parts of the country.
