Qatar-Backed Wheat Seed and Fertilizer Distribution Reaches 2,000 Farmers in Logar
The Taliban-controlled Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock in Afghanistan’s Logar province has distributed improved wheat seeds and chemical fertilizers to 2,000 farmers, with support from Qatar.
The aid packages were delivered in the districts of Baraki Barak, Kharwar, Mohammad Agha, and Khoshi.
According to information provided by the department, each farmer received 50 kilograms of improved wheat seed, 50 kilograms of urea fertilizer, and 50 kilograms of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer. The total value of the aid amounts to around 23 million Afghanis, funded by the Qatar Red Crescent Society.
Maulvi Sher Agha Pir Habib-ur-Rahman, head of Logar’s agriculture department, confirmed the distribution and said the initiative aims to support winter wheat cultivation. While the program may help meet part of local agricultural needs, questions remain over its adequacy, transparency, and sustainability under Taliban rule.
In the absence of a legitimate government with international recognition, the agricultural sector’s dependence on foreign aid highlights the weakness of domestic institutions and the Taliban administration’s failure to provide fundamental support for Afghan farmers.
