Kim Jong Un says North Korea’s new destroyer is part of nuclear response system

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said the country’s newly unveiled destroyer will be part of its nuclear response system and is capable of carrying out devastating retaliatory strikes.

He made the remarks at the destroyer’s unveiling ceremony in eastern North Korea, saying its deployment near the east coast sends a clear message to the country’s enemies.

Kim also stressed that the time has come for North Korea to exercise its sovereignty at sea and underwater. He said the country would continue strengthening its nuclear capabilities in the maritime sector.

North Korea’s state news agency reported that the 5,000-ton Kang Kon destroyer is the country’s second vessel of this type. According to the report, the Choe Hyon destroyer was unveiled three months ago off North Korea’s west coast.

North Korea is located in East Asia, and its weapons and nuclear programmes have been among the main sources of tension between the country and its regional rivals and the West in recent years.
