Free Surgery Begins for 120 Children With Cleft Lip and Palate in Kabul
Free treatment and surgery for about 120 children with cleft lip and palate has begun at the Afghan Red Crescent Society’s central hospital in Kabul.
The Afghan Red Crescent Society, which operates under the control of the Taliban administration, said in a statement on Sunday, 15 September, that a specialist medical team from the Islamic Centre of Bangladesh had launched the treatment programme at the organisation’s central hospital.
Hamza Shahidul Islam, a representative of the Islamic Centre, said this was the fourth visit by the centre’s medical team to Kabul to carry out such operations. He said 285 children had undergone surgery in the previous three stages, and nearly 120 more children would be treated and operated on in the current phase.
Cleft lip and palate are congenital conditions that can be treated but require specialised surgery for many children. The Afghan Red Crescent Society’s central hospital in Kabul is one of the centres providing part of these services in cooperation with partner organisations.
