UN Women calls for lifting restrictions on female aid workers in Afghanistan
UN Women has said that female aid workers in Afghanistan must be able to continue their humanitarian work in safe conditions and without restrictions on movement, a matter it said directly affects women’s and girls’ access to essential aid.
The agency wrote on X on Wednesday, 11 September, that in many cases female aid workers are the only way to deliver assistance to women and girls in need. According to UN Women, these staff can help provide women and girls with access to vital information, support and essential services.
The call comes as women in Afghanistan under Taliban rule face broad restrictions in the areas of work, education, movement and social participation. These restrictions have also reduced the ability of humanitarian organisations to provide services to women and girls.
UN Women is one of the United Nations’ specialised agencies focused on women’s rights and empowerment, and in recent years it has repeatedly warned about the impact of restrictions on the lives of women in Afghanistan.
