Taliban Rejects Policy Changes on Women in Return for Recognition
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told RT that the group is not prepared to change its internal policies in exchange for recognition, a stance that in practice underscores the continuation of restrictions on women and girls.
In response to a question about the restrictions imposed on women and girls, he said Afghanistan has its own religious beliefs, domestic interests and laws, and these must be respected. Mujahid rejected any change to these policies in the interview.
The Taliban spokesman also said Kabul wanted normal diplomatic relations with Washington. According to him, reopening the US embassy in Afghanistan, establishing Afghanistan’s mission in the United States, lifting sanctions and unfreezing Afghanistan’s assets could help improve relations with Western countries.
In another part of the interview, Mujahid claimed that Afghanistan is in a better position five years after the withdrawal of US forces, although he said the country still faces serious problems. He described the departure of foreign troops as the return of Afghanistan’s independence.
He also described Russia as an important regional partner and said the Taliban administration was interested in expanding cooperation with Moscow in trade, reconstruction, fuel and energy.
Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban administration has faced sustained domestic and international criticism over sweeping restrictions on the education, work and public presence of women and girls. Despite the criticism, officials in the administration have repeatedly insisted on continuing their policies.
