Afghanistan Extends Power Supply Deal with Uzbekistan Until 2026

Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the national electricity company, has announced the extension of its electricity import agreement with Uzbekistan until the end of 2026. According to the company, the contract will ensure a steady power supply in the coming year, while also facilitating economic growth, attracting investment, and expanding infrastructure development in the energy sector.

In a statement published on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), DABS emphasized that the agreement’s renewal will help prevent power outages in various parts of Afghanistan.

In addition to the extension, DABS has signed four major agreements this year with Uzbek companies, valued at a total of $243 million. These agreements include the extension of the 500 kV Surkhan–Dasht-e Alwan transmission line, the expansion of the Arghandi power station, the extension of the 220 kV Kabul–Sheikh Mesri transmission line, and the construction of the Sheikh Mesri power station.

However, concerns remain that a lack of transparency and poor management under the Taliban administration could seriously hamper the implementation of these projects. Infrastructure development in the electricity sector requires legal oversight, transparent budgeting, and extensive technical cooperation — all of which face significant challenges in Afghanistan’s current political environment.
