Nearly Two Tons of Drugs Seized and Burned in Zabul and Uruzgan

The Taliban’s Counter-Narcotics Directorate has announced that nearly 1,980 kilograms of yama—also known as woma—were seized and then destroyed during several operations in the southern Afghan provinces of Zabul and Uruzgan.

According to official sources, three local residents have been arrested in connection with the case. After preliminary investigations, their related documents have been handed over to judicial authorities.

Zabul and Uruzgan, located in southern Afghanistan, are considered vulnerable regions for the cultivation and trafficking of narcotics. This comes as the Taliban administration, despite promises to combat drug trafficking, has so far failed to establish effective and lasting control over the production and smuggling cycle in the country.

Critics argue that symbolic and selective actions, such as burning drug consignments without addressing the systemic roots of the trade, are unlikely to curb its expansion in Afghanistan.
