Wardak Governor Calls for Expanded FAO Cooperation on Water Management

Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa, the governor of Wardak province, has called for expanded cooperation with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in water management, agriculture, and livestock in the province during his meeting with Richard Trenchard, the head of the FAO.

According to a report by Bakhtar News Agency, both sides discussed implementing projects related to water storage, strengthening agriculture, and supporting farmers. The Wardak governor emphasized that constructing small water storage dams and similar initiatives could prevent flood damage and improve agriculture and livestock conditions.

He also identified water resource management and the provision of improved seeds as fundamental needs for the residents of the province—an issue that has gained greater importance for farmers in recent years due to the recurrence of natural events.

Meanwhile, the FAO head stated that the organization, in coordination with local authorities and relevant bodies, will continue its cooperation in enhancing agriculture, livestock, water management, and distribution of improved seeds.

Wardak is one of the agricultural provinces in the country’s central region, where a large portion of the population depends on farming and livestock. Vulnerability to floods and water resource shortages is among its major challenges.
