Taliban Administration Calls for Increased Aid to Flood Victims Amid Widespread Damage

Following extensive damage caused by recent floods across more than 15 provinces, the Taliban administration has urged international organizations and aid agencies to expand their cooperation in addressing the immediate needs of the victims and managing the consequences of climate change.

The Disaster Preparedness Office announced that this issue was discussed in a meeting chaired by Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, attended by representatives from several international bodies including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Rescue Committee, the Aga Khan Foundation for Afghan Settlements, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Food Programme (WFP).

Mullah Nooruddin Turabi stated that despite Afghanistan’s minimal contribution to climate change, the country has been severely affected by its consequences. The recent floods were not limited to Nuristan province but have also caused significant loss of life and property damage in several other provinces.

According to the Taliban administration, the meeting covered topics such as the effects of climate change and the El Niño phenomenon, assessment of recent floods, emergency coordination, rapid needs assessment of flood victims, and strengthening early warning systems. Additionally, the meeting emphasized improving information exchange mechanisms, enhancing the capacities of provincial teams, and mobilizing resources to reduce the risks of natural disasters.

This comes as Afghanistan has repeatedly experienced floods, droughts, and other natural events in recent years, with a significant portion of its relief efforts relying on assistance from international organizations.
