Devastating Floods in Nuristan Trigger Wave of Domestic and International Responses
Following the devastating floods in Parun city, the capital of Nuristan province, a wave of condolence messages and calls for accelerated aid have been issued by international officials and prominent Afghan figures, drawing widespread attention both domestically and abroad.
The Japanese Ambassador, the European Union, the Iranian Embassy in Kabul, Richard Lindsay, the UK Special Representative for Afghanistan, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed their sorrow over the incident, extended condolences to the families of the victims, and emphasized ongoing support for those affected.
Hamid Karzai, the former President of Afghanistan, has urged national traders and aid organizations to take immediate action to address the situation of the flood victims in Nuristan. Similarly, Rashid Khan, star of the Afghanistan national cricket team, has called on national and international organizations, charitable institutions, and the country’s benefactors to support the affected by providing food, medicine, shelter, and other urgent needs.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Preparedness Authority reported that according to preliminary statistics, 23 people have been killed, 80 injured, and nearly 100 others are missing due to the floods. Taj Mohammad Hemat, the deputy spokesperson of the authority, stated that 15 bodies have been recovered from under the rubble and mud so far, and search and damage assessment operations are ongoing.
Officials noted that seven houses were completely destroyed and 23 others partially damaged. Additionally, dozens of shops, vehicles, and hotels have also been affected. They emphasized that these are initial figures and the number of victims and the extent of damage may increase.
Nuristan, a mountainous province in eastern Afghanistan, has repeatedly faced deadly floods and extensive damage to local infrastructure in recent years.
