EU Warns of High Maternal Mortality Rates Persisting in Afghanistan
The European Union has stated that Afghanistan remains among the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates, emphasizing that access to quality healthcare services for mothers and newborns is an urgent need.
On its X (formerly Twitter) page, the EU announced it had visited a maternity care center in Logar province in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA); this center is managed by midwives.
According to the European Union, the center is funded with financial support from the EU, where trained midwives provide prenatal and childbirth healthcare services to mothers and newborns.
The EU stressed that delivering prenatal and childbirth health services plays a fundamental role in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality—a matter that has become a serious concern in recent years due to widespread challenges in Afghanistan’s healthcare system.
