Climate Agencies Warn of Severe Flood Risks in Afghanistan Due to Strong El Niño

The World Meteorological Organization and several reputable climate agencies have issued warnings about an increased likelihood of a strong El Niño phenomenon developing in the coming months. This phenomenon could heighten the risk of heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across various regions of Afghanistan. Experts note that Afghanistan is among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of this climate event due to its susceptibility to climate change.

According to climate assessments, if past patterns repeat, the central, western, and northern provinces are most likely to experience intense rainfall. Bamyan, Daikundi, Herat, Farah, Sar-e Pol, Jowzjan, Faryab, and parts of Balkh, Takhar, and Badakhshan are among the areas that could face extensive flooding.

Experts have warned that heavy autumn rainfall could damage homes, agricultural lands, and orchards, posing a serious threat to the livelihoods of thousands of families. This warning comes amid concerns that many residents in vulnerable areas lack sufficient resources to respond effectively to natural disasters.

Afghanistan experienced severe floods last year that affected thousands of families. Despite several months having passed, some of the damaged areas have yet to be fully rebuilt. Concerns remain about the limited capacity of relevant agencies under the Taliban administration to manage potential new crises. Experts emphasize the urgent need for preventive preparedness, strengthening early warning systems, and supporting local communities.
