UN Warns Afghan Returnee Host Areas Under Severe Strain

The United Nations has warned that areas in Afghanistan hosting returnees are facing severe pressure and lack the capacity to meet their needs.

Speaking at a press conference in New York on Wednesday, November 11, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said that according to information from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Afghanistan, local host areas are under significant stress.

He pointed out that these regions are simultaneously grappling with a large influx of returnees, declining economic activity, the impacts of climate change, and the aftermath of recent earthquakes.

Experts say the Taliban administration’s neglect of returnees’ basic needs and its lack of migration management planning have further complicated the situation. International organizations, including the UN, have criticized the inefficient administrative structure, lack of job opportunities, and insufficient support for host communities.

This comes amid the return of thousands of Afghan migrants from neighboring countries in recent months, the majority of whom face housing shortages, limited access to social services, and inadequate support.
