EU Warns of Maternal Health Crisis in Afghanistan Amid Restrictions on Women

The European Union has declared that the maternal health situation in Afghanistan has reached a critical stage. On Friday, July 3rd, the EU’s Humanitarian Aid Office for Asia and the Pacific announced on X (formerly Twitter) that restrictions on women’s education and limited access to healthcare services have worsened the conditions.

The agency emphasized its support for providing life-saving care for mothers and newborns in Afghanistan and affirmed that humanitarian aid in this sector continues.

International organizations have repeatedly warned that women’s access to education and health services plays a decisive role in reducing maternal mortality. Afghanistan has long faced extensive challenges in maternal and child health.

Since the Taliban regained control of the country, broad restrictions on women’s education, employment, and mobility have been imposed. Many human rights organizations believe these limitations have made it harder for women to access essential services, including healthcare, highlighting an urgent need for accountability and serious reconsideration of these policies.
