Iran’s Foreign Minister Araqchi Arrives in Baghdad for Talks with Iraqi Officials

Seyed Abbas Araqchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, arrived in Baghdad on Sunday morning heading a diplomatic delegation to hold talks with senior Iraqi officials on bilateral relations and regional developments. According to official statements, coordinating the arrangements for the funeral ceremony of the martyred leader of the Islamic Revolution in the sacred Iraqi shrines is a key agenda of this trip.
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry who is accompanying the delegation, stated that the Foreign Minister will meet with Iraq’s President, Prime Minister, and Foreign Minister. He emphasized that expanding relations between Tehran and Baghdad remains a top priority of Iran’s foreign policy.
Upon arrival in Baghdad, the Foreign Minister paid tribute by laying flowers at the site where the martyred General Qasem Soleimani and his companions were killed. He then met with his Iraqi counterpart, Fouad Hussein, at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry building to discuss issues of mutual interest.
In recent weeks, following the formation of Iraq’s new government, Araqchi congratulated the appointment of Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi and the continuation of Fouad Hussein as Foreign Minister, highlighting that the development of friendly relations between the two countries will continue.
This visit comes as Araqchi previously traveled to Baghdad in October 2024 and met with Iraqi officials. Additionally, on December 6, 2024, he participated in a trilateral meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Iraq, and Syria held in Baghdad.
