Switzerland Pledges $1.95 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Afghanistan

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that the Swiss government has contributed 1.5 million Swiss francs, equivalent to 1.95 million US dollars, to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, as the humanitarian crisis in the country remains widespread.

On Thursday, June 25, OCHA expressed appreciation for Switzerland’s support in a message posted on the social media platform X, saying that such assistance can restore hope to people whose lives have been severely impacted by ongoing crises and sudden shocks.

According to UN statistics, 21.9 million people in Afghanistan require humanitarian aid this year. Meanwhile, decreased funding has posed significant challenges to meeting the needs of vulnerable populations.

The United Nations had requested $1.71 billion to respond to Afghanistan’s humanitarian situation in 2024, but so far only 16 percent of that amount has been secured. This funding shortfall persists amid existing restrictions and structural issues within the country, which have made access to essential services more difficult and increased millions’ reliance on foreign aid.
