Afghanistan-Pakistan Tensions Key Focus at BRICS Security Advisors Meeting in New Delhi

Indian media reports that tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan will be a central topic at the two-day meeting of national security advisors from BRICS member countries held in New Delhi. The summit will concentrate on emerging security challenges, including terrorism.

The meeting is chaired by Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor, as part of India’s rotating presidency of BRICS. Senior security officials from member countries, including China, Russia, and Iran, will participate in the discussions.

According to reports, the security implications of the Afghanistan-Pakistan tensions for the region will be a major point of discussion. The recent increase in border clashes and mutual distrust has raised concerns at the regional level.

Since the Taliban’s return to power, the group has struggled to establish stable and predictable relations with its neighbors, particularly Pakistan. Consequently, Afghanistan has become a recurring topic in regional and international meetings. Experts believe that the continuation of this situation could negatively impact regional security and economic cooperation.

Participants will also exchange views on cross-border terrorism, the crises in West Asia, the Ukraine war, and other emerging security threats. The progress of BRICS cooperation in counter-terrorism and cybersecurity will be assessed, with an emphasis on finding ways to enhance coordination among member states.

The New Delhi meeting takes place as security developments in Afghanistan and the strained relations between Kabul and Islamabad have become key issues in multilateral regional and global discussions.
