Doha Hosts Roundtable on Afghanistan’s Future Relations with the World

The Embassy of Qatar in Afghanistan announced that a roundtable meeting on Afghanistan’s relations with the international community was held in Kabul. The meeting included representatives from UNAMA and the Taliban administration’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to a statement from the Qatar Embassy, participants in the meeting included Murad Al-Kashouti, Qatar’s ambassador to Kabul; Georgette Gagnon, acting head of UNAMA; Scott Smith, head of UNAMA’s political section; Zakir Jalali, deputy of political affairs; and Abdul Hay Qanet, head of the Strategic Studies Center at the Taliban administration’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the future of Afghanistan’s engagement with the international community and ways to strengthen these relations. No further details about the discussions or potential decisions were released.

This meeting comes as the Taliban administration, several years after regaining control over Afghanistan, remains unrecognized by many countries, with Kabul’s official relations with the international community continuing at a limited level. Observers believe that improving Afghanistan’s foreign relations depends on practical steps such as forming an inclusive government, respecting citizens’ fundamental rights, and establishing acceptable frameworks for international interactions.
