Kabul Water Supply Project Budget Approved by Taliban Economic Commission

The Executive Director of the Emirati Water Supply and Urban Sewage Company announced that the budget for the mid-term water supply project for Kabul city (MTP1) has been approved during the tenth meeting of the Taliban’s Economic Commission, and practical work will resume. According to him, once completed, more than one and a half million residents of Kabul will have access to safe drinking water.

Maulvi Ghulam-ur-Rahman Kazim stated that the first phase of the project had previously reached over 65% completion, and the second phase about 75%. He added that with the provision of fresh funds, the process of completing the remaining parts will recommence.

The Emirati company official also said that to address the drinking water shortage in the capital, efforts are underway to transfer water from the Panjshir River sources, Shah-wa-Arus Dam, and Shah-tut Dam. Kabul has faced a decline in groundwater levels and population growth in recent years, making access to safe water a major challenge for the city.

Officials from the company also mentioned that surveys and designs for many areas of the city have been completed, and surveying and designing the remaining regions will soon be carried out. However, Kabul residents expect the Taliban administration to provide not only updates on progress but also a precise and transparent timeline for the project’s completion.
