UNFPA Warns of Limited Access to Health Services for Women in Afghan Villages

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has stated that access to information and health services for women, especially in remote areas of Afghanistan, can reduce pregnancy-related risks and improve the health of mothers and newborns. The agency emphasized that the lack of adequate facilities in rural areas remains a serious challenge for pregnant women.

According to a report published on Sunday, June 21, many women in villages are forced to give birth at home due to the shortage of health centers and delivery facilities; a situation that exposes them to serious health complications. This is while regular access to prenatal care can prevent many of these risks.

UNFPA said that the establishment and strengthening of local health centers have increased awareness among pregnant women and improved their health status. These centers provide services such as regular check-ups, vaccinations, nutritional supplements, and health education related to prenatal care and hygiene.

According to the organization, awareness of danger signs and timely visits to medical centers play a decisive role in preventing avoidable deaths and illnesses. However, the continuing restrictions and lack of health infrastructure in several provinces highlight the Taliban administration’s responsibility to provide essential health services—services to which equal access is a fundamental right of all citizens, especially women.
