500kV Sheberghan Power Project Nears Completion in Afghanistan

Officials from the private company Afghan Invest have announced, during a meeting with Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban’s Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, that the 500kV Sheberghan-Dasht-e-Polwan electricity transmission project and the expansion of the Dasht-e-Polwan substation have reached their final stages and are scheduled to be operational within the next four months.
According to the company, once completed, this project will increase electricity transmission capacity in several northern regions of the country. The Sheberghan-Dasht-e-Polwan project is considered a critical infrastructure initiative in the energy sector, aimed at strengthening the power grid and improving consumer access.
Afghan Invest officials also reported progress in the second phase of lead mine exploration in Tulak district, Ghor province. They stated that the remaining work on this project would be completed with the collaboration of domestic and foreign experts.
During the meeting, Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar welcomed the reported advancements and emphasized that while the mining exploration continues, construction of a mineral processing plant and the provision of necessary power should also commence. He assured the Taliban administration’s cooperation with these projects.
However, economic experts consistently stress the need for transparency in mining contracts and major infrastructure projects. They argue that transparent and accountable management is essential to ensure real benefits for local residents and sustainable economic growth.
