Political Analyst Warns Border Agreements Threaten Afghanistan’s Territorial Integrity

Sami Yousafzai, a political analyst, has described recent agreements between local residents and Pakistanis along the Durand Line as the beginning of a dangerous process threatening Afghanistan’s territorial integrity, strongly criticizing the current Taliban administration’s policies. He warned that this situation could lead the country towards fragmentation.

On his X (formerly Twitter) page, Yousafzai wrote that while the Taliban administration claims full sovereignty over Afghan territory, in some areas like Kunar and Nuristan, local residents have independently negotiated ceasefires with Pakistanis and broken blockades. According to him, holding jirgas and border negotiations outside the official authority and jurisdiction of Kabul indicates the weakening of the central government’s position.

The analyst also stated that Maria Sultan’s statements cannot be regarded as merely personal opinions but rather as those of a spokesperson for the “powerful forces” in Pakistan, who, in his view, have troubling intentions towards Afghanistan’s geography.

Yousafzai warned that if this trend continues, residents of Wakhan and Badakhshan might also enter into separate agreements without coordinating with Kabul in the future; a situation that, according to him, would push Afghanistan toward tribal and autonomous territories.

He emphasized that if the Taliban administration desires a national stance and a united Afghanistan, it must abandon its current restrictive policies and adopt a clear, common, and inclusive national policy. Ending on a cautionary note, Yousafzai wrote, “Let us not chant slogans of a Greater Afghanistan while in practice making the existing Afghanistan smaller.”

In recent days, reports of local ceasefires arranged through jirgas along the Durand Line have increased; some consider these agreements beneficial for the residents, while others view them as signs of weakness in the central administration.
