Kabul and Tashkent Discuss Drug Export Partnership

Hamdullah Zahed, Deputy Minister for Food and Drugs at the Taliban’s Ministry of Public Health, met with Jamshid Badalov, Deputy Ambassador of Uzbekistan in Kabul, along with a delegation from Uzbek pharmaceutical companies. The main focus of the meeting was launching the export of pharmaceutical products from Uzbekistan to Afghanistan based on a memorandum of understanding signed between the two parties.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Public Health, the meeting also included discussions about the capacity of domestic drug production in Afghanistan. Both sides exchanged views on ways to strengthen this capacity and meet the country’s health needs.

The statement further noted that facilitating the registration process for foreign companies in Afghanistan, exploring investment opportunities in the pharmaceutical and health product sectors, and expanding joint cooperation were among other topics discussed.

In recent years, Afghanistan has been heavily dependent on drug imports, with a significant portion of the market’s needs supplied from abroad. Efforts to attract investment and develop domestic production could help reduce this dependency and improve people’s access to quality medicines.
